While MINI vehicles are known for their reliability and long-lasting nature, even the most dependable vehicles encounter one of the most common MINI service issues from time to time: a dead battery. Knowing how to jump-start the battery in your MINI car is a valuable skill that can get you back on the road quickly and safely. Here at Fields MINI of Glencoe, our team of friendly MINI technicians is happy to share an overview of how to jump-start a battery.

Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools. You’ll need a set of jumper cables and a functioning vehicle with a charged battery to provide the boost.

Position the Vehicles

Park the functioning vehicle close to your MINI car, ensuring that both vehicles are positioned nose to nose or side by side. Make sure both vehicles are in park and that the ignition and all accessories are turned off.

Connect the Jumper Cables

With both vehicles turned off, open the hoods, and locate the batteries. Attach one end of the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of the functioning battery and attach the black clamp to the other (negative) post. Next, attach the red clamp at the other end of the cables to the positive terminal on your dead battery; then, attach the corresponding black clamp to an unpainted metal part of your MINI vehicle.

Start the Vehicles

When the cables are securely connected, start the functioning vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. Afterwards, try to start your MINI. If it starts, let both vehicles run for a few more minutes.

Once your MINI car has been jump-started successfully and is running, carefully disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order in which they were connected. Keep your vehicle running (or drive it) for at least 15 minutes to ensure it holds the charge.
